- Supervisor’s column July 30, 2019

The first of three years of the NYS Little League Championship in Penfield is in the history books! Congratulations to Haverstraw, who will advance to play the winners from Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Washington D.C. in the Mid-Atlantic Regionals, August 4 to 10 in Bristol, Connecticut. The winner of the Mid-Atlantic Regional advances to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

I would like to recognize Greg Kamp, President of Penfield Little League (PLL), and the PLL Board of Directors for all their work to make this event happen here in Penfield. I would also like to thank the many PLL players and their parents for volunteering, the Penfield Business Chamber, and the Penfield DPW Parks Department for their work on the fields and complex. Lastly, many thanks to all the wonderful sponsors who stepped up to support this amazing event. Your commitment to this program and our community is appreciated…thank you!

Our goal for the next two years working in partnership with PLL is to make this championship event bigger and better so that Little League International ALWAYS wants the NYS League Championship to stop in Penfield on the way to Williamsport!

The next amphitheater event is tonight, Tuesday, July 30, as “Paulsen & Baker” (kids/family) takes the stage to entertain you. Next Tuesday, August 6, will feature the “Rochester Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra.” All programs begin at 6:30 PM at the Penfield Amphitheater on the Kiwanis Stage, located behind the town hall; food will be available for purchase. I hope to see you there!

The next scenic trek hosted by the Penfield Trails Committee will be held on Saturday, August 10 from 9:00 to 11:00 AM at Ellison Park. Discover the “offbeat” pathways that reveal the natural vistas. Please wear appropriate footwear and no pets are allowed. Meet at the south entrance, 1008 Penfield Road and look for the hike signs.

Bri-Pen Senior Rides…this community volunteer transportation service is for adults age 65 and older who require transportation to medical appointments, religious services and town community centers. Clients must be ambulatory and not on oxygen (Canes and walkers are fine. Service cannot accommodate wheelchairs.)

Older adults who live or pay taxes within Brighton or Penfield are eligible to receive this client donation-based service. Rides are available 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM (except holidays) on weekdays for medical appointments, on weekends for religious services, and any day for community centers. For planning purposes, ride requests must be made one to three weeks in advance. Rides are dependent on driver availability, and the service may not be used for medical appointments that require any type of sedation.

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS AND DISPATCHERS ARE NEEDED! Volunteer drivers are screened and trained by Lifespan’s Give a Lift program and they receive supplemental insurance for their services. Dispatchers work out of their home one day a week for three hours or less. Please call 585-340-8674 to request enrollment in the program, to schedule a ride, or volunteer.

Looking for a unique and always appreciated gift for someone? Give your friend or loved one a gift certificate for Penfield Recreation! Certificates are available in any denomination and may be purchased at the Recreation office, 1985 Baird Road, or over the phone with a credit card: (585) 340-8655, option 0. Gift certificates are good for any of Penfield Recreation’s programs or services. Give them a gift they can use—the gift of wellness!

Until next week, enjoy the latter part of the week…warm temperatures, low humidity, and plenty of sunshine. This is what we wait for every year!
