The next guided hike by the Penfield Trails Committee will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Lucien Morin Park. The hike through this Monroe County Park will be primarily through the heavily wooded area along Irondequoit Creek. It will traverse the slopes and ravines as well as some of the creek banks. Away from the creek you will see elements of the Old Rifle Range, the location of the clubhouse, the restored gazebo, and the shooting pits. This diversified hike will also have overlooks of Irondequoit Creek, wetlands, and meadows. You will stop at the narrows and observe and learn about the low-flow barrier. Meet at Empire Blvd. at the south end of Irondequoit Bay. There is a Monroe County Park sign and driveway entrance just east of MacGregor’s Grill & Tap Room. Please park in the graveled area and look for the hike signs.
Last week I had the honor and privilege of presenting Certificates of Appreciation to Marvin Bielicki and Hugh Franklin of the Penfield Volunteer Emergency for 50 years of service to the Penfield community. Since 1969, both these amazing individuals have spent countless hours training, responding to emergencies, and serving our great town in whatever emergencies came their way. Hugh and Marv, thank you for your service, it does not go unrecognized by our residents; you are benchmarks of outstanding service in the EMS community across this county!
Veterans Memorial Park at the Town Hall “rocked” this past Sunday as Mary Cariola held its 11th Annual Walking on Sunshine event to help raise critical funds for the children and young adults with complex disabilities who attend Mary Cariola Children’s Center. We have been honored to host the family-friendly walk, food, activities, raffle, and entertainment for the past several years at Veterans Memorial Park. More than 1,100 people participated in this wonderful event that is the biggest annual fundraiser to support the Mary Cariola organization. For more information about Walking on Sunshine and future programs please go to www.marycariola.org. Thank you for all you do in this county and region to support our youngest residents…Mary Cariola “rocks”!

I close this week’s column with a shout-out to the town’s employee wellness team members who were recognized last week with the MVP Certificate of Achievement 2019 Workplace Platinum Well-Being Award for demonstrating a true commitment to the well-being of our employees and the success of the organization. I would like to recognize Andy Urckfitz and Laura Sliker for being co-chairs of our Wellness Committee and all the members of the committee for helping with plans, programs, and ideas for inspiring wellness for all Penfield’s employees and their families. Until next week…summer is over and fall has moved in. Please visit our farm markets throughout town to enjoy all they have to offer this time of year. We are fortunate they provide such a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to help all our families bring fresh, seasonal produce into our homes!
