Penfield DPW to begin oil and stone road resurfacing work in late May
Beginning in late May, the Town of Penfield Department of Public Works will begin oil and stone resurfacing on roadways throughout the Town of Penfield. This work is part of a regular road maintenance program that targets approximately 15 miles of Town-owned roads each year.

Work includes the application of oil to seal the pavement surface and fill any small surface cracks that allow water into the pavement, shortening the life of the road. Crushed stone adds friction as a wear surface to minimize slippery roads and improve safety. Oil and stone resurfacing is not done as an alternative to paving; rather, it is preventative maintenance to prolong the life of roadways, much like the practice of residential driveway sealing. Cul-de-sacs receive a micro-paving treatment in lieu of oil and stone.

The resurfacing process is brief, and access to the roads will be disrupted for only 10 to 15 minutes; roads can be driven on immediately at a reduced speed of 10 to 15 mph. DPW street sweepers will clean up loose stone within a few weeks of application.
