In January 2017, the Penfield Town Board began working with MRB Group to explore the potential construction of a new Department of Public Works facility. The current DPW facility was originally constructed in 1957. Over the years, the Town of Penfield has continued to grow, and the DPW facility has not kept pace with the growth. In February of 2023, Director of Public Works Eric Tait and representatives from MRB Group shared a preliminary proposal for constructing a new DPW facility.

On Wednesday, May 15, the Penfield Town Board awarded five contracts for the construction of a new Penfield Department of Public Works facility at 1607 Jackson Road. The contracts awarded include general construction, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, and a fuel island. Construction is expected to commence in June and last approximately two years.
The new facility will be built on the northern side of the current DPW complex (1607 Jackson Road) and requires phased construction. Throughout the project, the DPW will continue serving the needs of the Penfield community with no interruptions to service
The five contracts total $21.4 million. The project is to be funded using assigned capital reserve funds and a municipal bond, which was approved by the Town Board on November 1, 2023. Any additional grant dollars received will offset the Town’s costs.

During a work session meeting on Wednesday, May 8, the Penfield Town Board reviewed bids received for the construction of a new DPW facility at 1607 Jackson Road. The bids received were below the initial project cost projections. MRB Group, the consultant and subject matter expert leading the project, assisted the Town Board in reviewing the bids and addressing project questions.
Following discussion, the Town Board authorized the preparation of resolutions to award each contract for the project. The Town Board will continue its work and is expected to vote on the resolutions at its upcoming meeting on Wednesday, May 15.
May 3, 2024
The project has been placed out to bid, and the Penfield Town Board is currently reviewing bids received at the end of April. Bids received will be discussed during a Town Board meeting on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 p.m.
January 2024 Update
The design of the new DPW facility is now substantially complete. The proposed facility will see the DPW almost triple in size from just under 30,000 SF to 73,000 SF. The bigger space will greatly enhance operational efficiency and give crews the proper workspace to do their jobs successfully.
The new proposed DPW includes a 26-bay vehicle garage with modern amenities maintenance area, administration office, breakroom, restroom facilities, kennel space for Animal Control, fire suppression system and additional modern safety features, salt storage building, sand storage building, pole barn, and fuel station.
During a Town Board meeting on Wednesday, November 1, the board passed a resolution giving the Town Board the ability to bond up to $25 million to pay for the project. $5 million in reserve funds were also identified to help fund the project. The $30 million currently allocated is not a final price tag; it is a project maximum and allows the planning process to continue.
